Welcome from Mayor Bill Bannock

Fire

Cowboys, Farmers or Firefighters?

Steak cooked on an open flame is the regular Friday feature at "The Roadkill Cafe" several firefighters were enjoying their meal and celebrating Romeo’s 23rd Birthday. Romeo is the youngest person on the team; his name Romeo, fits his lifestyle.

Gordon is the oldest member and he suggested that on this fine afternoon the team should burn down an old barn on his farm. Gord had already obtained a burning permit and was convinced that no fire tender would be required as there was nothing within site which could possibly catch fire.

When I arrived at the farm west of town the old barn was well engulfed in flame and as I drove over the field could see men running around throwing snow onto the roofs of chicken coops, grain storage sheds and other out buildings. The flames had grown so high and the breeze carried burning wood into the air and landed on the other buildings. One hundred year old cedar shingles, and tar tiles were smouldering and burning.

Gord drove his tractor with a front loader bucket and tipped snow onto the roofs. Larry climbed up onto the granary roof and began removing shingles and compacting snow in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

Meantime two old oak trees caught light, so Dan sped to the fire hall to get the tanker, arriving back just in time to save the all out buildings. The main barn that they set fire too, and intended to watch while having a few beers was raised to the ground by this time and all was safe. So nothing more to do than roll up the hoses and break open a case of Bud Light Beer.

Those who were there are wantabe Cowboys, some are farmers, but all are qualified Firefighters!
